Mechanical Keyboard Switches Explained

Updated July 2026 · 7 min read

Switches are the heart of every mechanical keyboard. They determine how typing feels, sounds, and whether you'll love or hate your board. Here's a clear breakdown of the three main types.

Linear switches

Smooth keystroke from top to bottom — no bump, no click. Popular with gamers because actuation is consistent and predictable. Examples: Cherry MX Red, Gateron Yellow, Akko CS Silver.

Tactile switches

A noticeable bump partway through the press tells you the key has actuated — without the loud click. The sweet spot for most office typists. Examples: Boba U4T, Cherry MX Brown, Holy Panda.

Clicky switches

Tactile bump plus an audible click on actuation. Satisfying but loud — your coworkers will notice. Examples: Cherry MX Blue, Kailh Box White, NK Cream Blue.

Switch weight (actuation force)

Measured in grams (e.g. 45g, 62g). Lighter switches are easier on fingers for long sessions; heavier switches reduce accidental presses. Most people are happy between 45g–55g.
